4 Tips On Frequent Oral Health Care Mistakes

No one wants to have poor oral health yet millions of Americans will deal with gum disease this year alone. In some cases, it’s due to people not taking care of their teeth because they feel as though they don’t have enough time. Some don’t think it’s important. Others simply don’t know what to do.

At Smile Focus we want everyone to have healthy gums and teeth. That’s why we’re bringing you four of the biggest mistakes we see people make along with tips on how to avoid them. When you’re done reading, contact our Stevenson Ranch dentist at (805) 501-4697 to set up an appointment.

1. Brushing too infrequently

There is nothing as important a brushing your teeth regularly. We recommend brushing at least twice a day. We also recommend that you brush for at least two minutes each time. If you eat something that has a lot of sugar or acid, then it is also wise to brush after eating or drinking it.

2. Flossing too infrequently

Are you one of the many people who does not think that flossing is important? The truth is that it may be more important than you think. It serves a purpose that brushing simply can’t. It gets into the tiny spaces your toothbrush is too small to get into, and it gets rid of plaque. This lowers the chances of infection and lowers the amount of bacteria in your mouth. You should be flossing at least once a day.

3. Not brushing correctly

While brushing twice a day for at least two minutes is a great start, it is not the only thing involved in property brushing. You should be brushing in gentle circles – not back and forth or up and down. You should use a soft-bristled brush because anything harder can harm your gums. You should never brush aggressively, as this can do damage to your gums. You should never use a toothbrush for more than six months without replacing it. Why? Because if it gets worn down, it will not clean as well as it once did.

4. Not visiting the dentist

Finally, it is essential that you visit your dentist twice a year, at a minimum. Generally speaking, we will do a cleaning and exam to get your teeth clean and find out if there are any conditions we need to be aware of. It is important that you see us regularly because the sooner we find out about a potential issue, the more easily we can treat it. Having bacteria cleaned off your teeth every six months also reduces the chances that you will need further dental procedures.
